Deven Golden is a graduate of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago with a major in painting and minor in Art History. In the 40 plus years since he has been involved in all areas of the art world, including as an exhibiting artist, museum curator, alternative gallery board member and exhibitions chair, independent curator, art consultant, director of two galleries – one in Chicago, one in New York. He ran his own gallery for five years in Soho and Chelsea in the 90s. He has been a visiting artist/critic or guest lecturer at multiple universities and colleges and taught professional practices at The School of the Art Institute and University of Illinois. Since 2011 he has presented a seminar on writing artist statements for the Professional Practices class at the Pratt Institute. He has curated over 30 exhibitions and has been writing catalogue essays and reviews on a regular basis for various publications since 1984, including The New Art Examiner, Dialogue, Bomb, and www.artcritical.com. He currently runs the blog www.artmonkeywrench.com. He lives in Jackson Heights, Queens, NY with his wife and daughter.
